Overcontrol, Self-Consciousness & Low Self-Trust
Responsible, capable, conscientious — and trapped inside your own rules.
From the outside you look like you have it together. Inside, you're monitoring everything: how you come across, whether you said it right, what could go wrong if you loosen your grip.
Control worked. That's the problem.
Overcontrol usually starts as a solution — it kept you safe, approved of, or out of trouble. The trouble is that a strategy built for an old situation now runs your whole life. Spontaneity feels dangerous. Mistakes feel unacceptable. Other people's freedom can quietly irritate you.
Underneath the control is usually a simple deficit: self-trust. If you trusted yourself to handle what happens, you wouldn't need to control everything in advance.
What we work on
We identify which rules still serve you and which are just old armor. Then we build self-trust the only way it can be built — through graduated experiences where you loosen control, something imperfect happens, and you handle it.
This is active work. Insight about why you're controlling is useful; practicing being less controlled is what changes your life.
What change looks like
You speak before you've perfected the sentence. You take a reasonable risk without a guarantee. You let something be good enough and discover the world didn't end.
Results differ by person. The aim is not to make you careless — it's to give you back the freedom your competence has earned.
You don’t have to know exactly what kind of help you need.
Tell Bill what is happening and what you want to change. He will help you identify an appropriate first step.
