Wilder Method Reset · Cold Immersion

Practice what happens when discomfort arrives.

You already know how you react when fear shows up. Reset gives you a controlled place to practice reacting differently — with a coach, in a few minutes of cold water, before it matters in your real life.

Cold immersion is an optional experiential practice. It is not required for individual therapy, and it is not appropriate for everyone. Screening and informed consent are required, participation is voluntary, and you may decline or stop at any time. It is not a replacement for medical or psychiatric treatment, no universal physical or psychological outcome is promised, and it is not covered by insurance.

Why cold

Not a stunt. A training ground.

Cold water is predictable, voluntary, and short. That makes it a useful place to rehearse the exact moment you keep losing at: the moment discomfort arrives and you back away. You always choose your own edge.

  • Stay presentYour body wants to leave. You learn to stay in the moment you're in.
  • Regulate your responseBreath first. The discomfort stops running the decision.
  • Tolerate discomfortYou find out you can be uncomfortable and still be fine.
  • Trust yourselfYou did the hard thing on purpose. That memory carries.
  • Face instead of avoidThe reflex to escape gets a different answer.

What to expect

Breath first. Then the water.

  1. 1

Breathing. About 20 minutes, Wim Hof–style, to learn to settle your own body.

  2. 2

Name what you're avoiding. One real thing, out loud.

  3. 3

Cold water. Coached, timed, and voluntary. Relaxed is the goal, not tough.

  4. 4

Warm up and reflect. What you noticed — then where you'll practice it this week.

Reset is an experiential program, not a medical treatment, and it is never required for therapy clients. Cold immersion isn’t appropriate for everyone — if you have a cardiac, respiratory, or pregnancy-related concern, check with your physician first.

Tell Bill what is happening and what you want to change. He will help you identify an appropriate first step.
